How much should you tip movers?
Tipping movers is common in the US, but it is not required. Here is a simple guide to how much people usually tip, and when to give more.
Guide amounts
| Move | Tip per mover |
|---|---|
| Half day (up to about 4 hours) | $10 to $25 |
| Full day | $20 to $50 |
| Or as a share of the bill | 15 to 20% in total |
Tip a bit more when
- there are many stairs or no elevator
- the crew moves heavy items such as a piano, a safe or a pool table
- it is very hot, cold or wet
- the crew packs, takes furniture apart or works a long day
Practical tips
- Give the tip in cash to each mover, or to the crew leader to share
- On a long distance move, tip the loading crew and the delivery crew separately
- Water, drinks and snacks are a welcome extra
- Check whether a service fee or gratuity is already on your bill
Questions about tipping movers
Do you have to tip movers?
No. Tipping is optional. Many people tip when the crew is careful and works hard, and give less or nothing when service is poor.
Do you tip movers from a moving company?
Yes, most people tip the crew of a moving company in the same way as independent movers. The tip goes to the crew, not the company.
Should I tip movers before or after the move?
Usually at the end, when the job is done. On a two-day move, you can tip the crew on each day.
